Although it is not a good idea to put anything into your baby’s ear canal, you may still do so when your doctor tells you to do so and for protection purposes. Kids need to be protected from surrounding loud noises for the reason that their auditory parts aren’t yet fully developed. Sometimes some noises are already loud for us adults, then how much louder it is for more little children.

Baby ear plugs can be very useful to infants and children as it can reduce irritation from unwanted noise and prevent damage to their hearing. There are many types of baby ear plugs, but I will just cite three of them.

Baby Ear Plugs for Noise

Wax and silicon ear plugs are ideal for toddlers and infants. These plugs are designed to cover the ear canal by filling the outer ear area and forming a seal against the outer ear. It also offers NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) of 22 to 33 protection. A good feature about this type of ear plugs is that they are flexible as you can mold them to fit your child’s ears specifically, so you won’t have a hard time looking for plugs that would fit the ear canals of your baby. They are also comfortable than most other choices. However, the downside for these ear plugs is that they can get dirty easily and wax can melt in very hot situations.

Baby Ear Plugs for Flying

If you plan on bringing your baby on an airplane ride, then it is best to get baby ear plugs for flying. During takeoffs and landings, the changes in rapid pressure in the plain can cause severe ear pain. The tiny tubes in the ear cannot accommodate enough air fast enough to equalize the pressure inside and this causes pressure build up in the eardrum. Some of the popular brand of baby ear plugs for flying are FliteMate earplugs and EarPlanes as they are built with tiny holes that helps in regulating air flow across the plug when the pressure changes.

Baby Ear Plugs for Swimming

The recommended baby ear plugs for swimming is Mack’s silicone. It is the traditional water protection as they are soft and they easily shaped up to fit any ear. They cover the ear canal which makes them ideal for toddlers and infants. One negative aspect of silicone plugs when use during swimming is that they can fall out easily and it would be hard to find them under water due to their small size. But the solution for that is to purchase an Ear Band-It headband for swimming because the rubber headband can keep the silicone plugs in while swimming. Yet if ever they still fall out, then another option is to get bright-colored silicon plugs such as color orange, red, light green or pink. They are easier to find if ever they fall.

Just a reminder: In using baby ear plugs, always watch out and be careful that your baby do not swallow the plugs as they are so tiny which means they can be a choking hazard. Secure the ear plugs in a place that is out of your child’s reach.

If you’re suffering from insomnia but you’re afraid of taking medications, then why don’t you try herbal remedies for sleep. It is best to first try natural insomnia remedies before jumping into stronger “hypnotic” type of drugs. Although they are not completely harmless and there is only little research on their effectiveness, there are still a number of advantages in taking herbal remedies. They have fewer side effects and is non-habit forming unlike prescribed strong medications. Some are combined with other ingredients that give a calming effect that helps you sleep better. Many people have reported that certain herbal meds have help improve sleep. Let’s look up and study five herbal sleep remedies.

Valerian

Valerian has been proven to be a very effective herbal sleep remedy. It is relaxing and contains sleep-inducing properties. Moreover, it is also an antihypertensive, calms digestion and relieves tension and anxiety. Valerian can provide better sleep to those who are insomniac and irregular sleepers. Eighty nine percent of valerian users have reported improved sleep and relief from insomnia. However, valerian is considered a depressant to the central nervous system. It is strongly advised not to take it every night and not to exceed the recommended dosage. Valerian is normally taken in tea form.

Passion Flower

Passion flower is a sedative and analgesic herb that has been already used centuries ago. It contains “harmin,” a property that can induce a dreamy state and mild euphoria. Not only does it induce sleep and have a calming effect, but passion flower can also relieve cramps, muscular spasms, hysteria, and even asthma. A tincture of 30 to 60 drops is used before going to bed.

Chamonile

Chamonile is a relaxing and calming herb that can also ease digestion, relieve pain and can assist in wound healing. It can be taken orally or use in bath infusions. On the contrary, chamomile can also be allergic to some people and it is strongly advised against pregnant women.

Hops

This herbal sleep remedy is good for general insomnia and for relieving restlessness, tension, indigestion or headaches. Besides being a sleep-inducing herb, it is also an antiseptic. Hops can be mixed with chamomile tea in equal parts.

St. John’s Wort

St. John’s wort is also considered a sedative and pain-relieving herb. It is also used to treat depression, anxiety, insomnia and of course improve the quality of sleep. You can use it as a tea drink or for your bath infusions. But on a side note, prolonged use of St. John’s Wort increases sensitivity to sunlight and it should not be taken with certain anti-depressant medications such as MAO inhibitors.

Herbal sleep remedies are indeed becoming popular as they are non-addictive and they are proven to promote improved sleep. It is also recommended to take them in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular sleep. In that way, it can help you resume to a regular sleeping pattern that will greatly benefit you.

It is very tempting to take an over the counter sleep aid or even have a sleeping pill prescribed to you. You should be very aware of some of the sleep aid side effects of both kinds. You should always check with a physician before taking anything.

Before resorting to taking sleep aids, you should have a doctor take a basic history of your sleep disorder. This will assist you in finding the most appropriate treatment. You may be experiencing event related insomnia, such as stress, anxiety of from a loss of someone close to you. This situational insomnia may be treated with alternative methods. Relaxation techniques and changes to your sleep routines may be helpful.

Others may experience long-term sleep disorders that may require medication. Before taking them you should be aware of potential side effects. There are many over the counter sleep aids available. You should always read the instructions and follow the directions carefully. There may be the possibility that your physician will prescribe a medication as well.

When you take any form of sleep aid, you have a chance of becoming dependent to the medication. At times, you will need to take more and more of them for it to be effective. With prolonged use, the pills may not work as well.

Some side effects of over the counter sleeps aids may include the dependency of taking them. You may also experience drowsiness the next day. Because over the counter sleep aids have antihistamines in them, you could experience dry mouth and blurred vision. Confusion and dizziness have also been reported.

Prescribed medications will also have sleep aid side effects and not only the potential dependence, but confusions, dry mouth and drowsiness during the day. They may also interfere with other medications you are taking and create some very life threatening side effects.

Another side effect of both the over the counter and prescribed sleep aids is the withdrawal experienced when taking them. Shaking, sweating and nausea can be experienced. Many doctors will recommend taking a sleep aid on an intermittent basis to prevent some dependency. Long-term use of these aids may have more serious side effects. In the older population that experiences more sleep disorder issues, and medical conditions, great care in using sleep aids is necessary.

Before taking any type of medication, your doctor should always be consulted to reduce potential problems, especially with other health issues. Trying homeopathic remedies and other sleep enchaining techniques may work for you. If you experience and sleep aid side effects, you should check with your doctor and perhaps stop taking them.
