There are over seventy sleep disorders that have been classified. A sleep disorder is something that interferes with a person getting a good nights sleep. Some of the disorders are sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy and snoring. All of these can be very disruptive and most are easily treated.

Sleep Disorder Statistics

It is estimated that over forty million people are affected by long-term sleep issues and another twenty million have short-term problems. One of the most common form is insomnia. Insomnia is caused by a physical issue or stress, anxiety and depression. Sleep Apnea is a condition whereby a person may experience short periods of stopping breathing. People who experience snoring may have sleep apnea. Narcolepsy is a condition affecting over 120,000 people and is a condition when a person has uncontrollable sleep. They may be working and just fall off to sleep.

We see 15% of people experience sleepwalking and 15% experience restless leg syndrome. Each of these conditions leads to difficulty in sleep or not obtaining a fitful sleep. We spend about 1/3 of our lives in bed trying to sleep. We know that sleep is the way in which our bodies rejuvenate themselves, resting our muscles and joints and other systems of the body. This is why it is so important to treat sleep disorders.

Without treatment, many people experience irritability, depression, headaches, memory loss, inability to concentrate and overall sense of being tired. With 14.71% of all Americans suffering either short term or long-term sleeping disorders, treatment and techniques to reduce insomnia and other sleep disorders is imperative.

Children are not immune to sleep disorders. It is estimated that over two million children suffer from not getting enough sleep or having difficulty falling to sleep. We also see a large trend in older adults over the age of 65, it is projected that half of this population suffer from sleep disorders. We can also directly relate that over 1,500 accidents are caused from someone suffering from a sleep disorder.

These sleep disorder statistics are staggering. As we see peoples lives affected by the stresses of the day due to economics, employment and political unrest, we will certainly see an increase in short term and long term sleep disorders. The good news is that this is easy to treat. Through medications, herbal remedies, fitness and relaxation, the prognosis are good for people to overcome their sleeping disorder.
